Careers

Careers information and advice is made available to all students at St John Paul II Catholic College from Year 7 through to Year 12 and we provide a range of Career learning experiences and opportunities throughout their time at the College.


Students and parents can make appointments to discuss possible career pathways in light of the student’s personal attributes, abilities and interests. Students in Years 10–12 can also access careers development within their Mentor Group, where activities and discussions will help with their career goals and digital portfolios.

Our range of services available to students including, but not limited to:

  • post school options
  • clarity/advice on what career paths best suit individuals
  • subject choices for Year 11
  • queries on available work experience
  • learning how to study efficiently
  • job applications
  • process for obtaining apprenticeships or traineeships.

Year 12 students are reminded that this is OPEN DAY season for the universities. Students are advised to attend the open Day for the uni or unis they are interested to go to next year - it will be time well spent! I would also like remind students to lodge their UAC applications by the Early Bird Closing Date of September 29. After this date the cost jumps considerably! All school leavers looking at an apprenticeship next year, especially those in Year 10, are reminded of the Western Sydney Apprenticeships Expo on Tuesday, August 29, at the Penrith Panthers Marquee. This is the place to be if you really want to connect with an employer!

The UAC GUIDES have been distributed and students are busy working their way through the application process! UAC have prepared a Powerpoint and YouTube video for Year 12 students which explains the application process. We advise all Year 12 students to look at this if they are requiring further clarification. Students can also see Mr Evans if they require specific assistance with their UAC application.

Once our Year 12s return to school after their trials the UAC GUIDES will be distributed. The Universities Admission Centre booklet is a comprehensive guide assisting students in understanding the application process . Late August/September is the season for the uni Open Days. I would strongly recommend students take advantage of these occasions and spend a few hours visiting the uni they want to attend next year. The school will also workshop the online application process with our Year 12s. Mr Evans, the Careers Adviser, is available for assistance if any student requires. As the school year for our Year 12s begins to wind down students are welcome to see Mr Evans for any advice on their post –school options.

The Expo is the perfect chance to apply for apprenticeships and traineeships from over 100 exhibitors representing industry, businesses, group training companies, registered training organisations and many more. The expo kicks off the recruitment process. Exhibitors get the chance to collect resumes and promote their organisation for upcoming recruitment drives. Careers Advisers from the Nepean Careers Forum are on hand to meet career seekers and parents to discuss career options. With Greater Western Sydney major infrastructure projects underway –Western Sydney Airport, road, as well as community, business and residential developments, there has never been a better time to start your journey on a rewarding career path. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet industry experts from a range of interesting fields, and learn about the opportunities that exist through apprenticeships and traineeships.

The new deadline for EAP Applications is fast approaching on Monday, 17 July. Applicants who have made positive contributions to their communities will benefit from lower minimum ATARs and receive an offer to study at ACU as early as August. Students will continue to benefit from opportunities to enhance their leadership and volunteering skills. Year 12 students are advised that you can now get a degree at TAFE! This is big news as studying a degree was once the preserve of the universities. Degree programs are quite varied and are available in Commerce, Business, Community Services, Property Valuation, Information Technology, 3D Art and Animation, Fashion Design, Early Childhood and Interior Design. More importantly, you do not need an ATAR to apply - you only have to have completed your HSC!

Year 12 students will be attending the Western Sydney Careers Expo on Thursday 22nd June at Sydney Showground Olympic Park (Week 9 of Term 2). In the past this event has proven to be valuable for our students as they have the opportunity to discuss their future plans and ambitions post –school with over a 100 exhibitors. Exhibitors include universities, TAFE and Training Colleges, apprenticeship and employment organisations plus providers of HSC resources. Students also have access to seminars on topics such as tertiary courses, HSC subjects, the UAC application process, employment options, gap years and study advice.

Welcome back to all students and family in 2017. If I can begin with any advice, it would be to remember to try your best whatever year group your in. A special mention must also be made of our Year 12 students who have an important year ahead of them! My advice to this group is to settle back into your study patterns as soon as possible, as this year will go very quickly. Set your sights high and aim to do the best you can.
